Wordpad replacement

AbiWord
An Open Source replacement for Microsoft Word or Wordpad, with spellcheck in 22 languages. Fast, powerful, and in my opinion, well worth the download. Supports many operating systems.

Notepad replacement

Metapad
A small, fast (and completely free) text editor to replace Windows Notepad but with many extra features. Spellcheck available via freeware ASpell -- see Metapad FAQ (but for UK English spelling, use args: --master=british -c)

MS Office alternative

OpenOffice.org
Generally considered THE free alternative to MS OfficeŽ. Multi-platform office productivity suite. It includes the key desktop applications, such as a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, and drawing program, with a user interface and feature set similar to other office suites. OpenOffice.org works transparently with a variety of file formats. Definitely top quality.

Fonts

Microsoft's Free Fonts
No longer available on the Microsoft site, but still freely available through SourceForge under the terms of the original licence. (look for "the fonts").

DejaVu font family
The high quality Vera font family made freely available by Bitstream and extended by the Open Source community.

Fontes Gratis
The site is mainly in Brazilian Portuguese, but with an index page in English (sort of). If you want "normal" fonts, try the Serif or Sans Serif categories.

Betterfonts
10,000 free fonts and counting! Either freeware, shareware or demo versions.

Type 1 Fonts: PostScript fonts should work better than TrueType ones in PDF documents. Here are some free Type 1 fonts I have collected.
Adobe Utopia, made freely available via the X-community for LaTex.
Bitstream Charter, made freely available in the same way
IBM Courier, also made freely available
URW versions of 35 base Postscript fonts, included with Ghostscript
Some plain-ish fonts. (I suspect some are the poorer quality "unhinted" Type 3. Quick check: Look at lower case "m" in a small font-size and see if the arches are equal in size.)
Some fancy and some poor quality plug-ugly fonts, including some old favorites

Personal Organisers

Digita Organiser
Looks and feels just like an electronic Filofax®. Free registration provides this legal activation number: 9209178.

Sticky Notes

ATNotes
ATnotes creates notes on the Windows desktop and supports English and German language, which is set automatically according to the system default language. Other languages also available.
