Len stood on The Strand, London, waiting for hand outs. Since the break up of his marriage, he had been going down and was getting desperate enough to kill himself.
"A chap told me to go to Lincoln Inn Fields where I would find a man with glasses, a cap with a bobble, and a beard."
Len followed the instructions and met Chris, from the Jesus Army. He stayed for a short time at the Jesus Army's London house, then moved into a Christian community near Northampton.
That was two and a half years ago.
"When I was at my worst, thinking of cutting my wrists, taking paracetamol or jumping under a train, the Jesus Army rescued me in a very practical way. Now, I have a strong faith in Jesus and I feel like I am becoming strong in my beliefs."
Len came from London. He had his fair share of illness, but when he was at his lowest, his wife of 27 years, Sally, also had an accident.
"I had gone to the library to change her books. When I came home, she talked to me kind of strangely, explaining how she had fallen asleep at the table and dropped onto the floor."
Sally had hurt her head and she changed quite dramatically. In the end, she had to be admitted to hospital and was under the care of a mental health clinic.
Len couldn't cope with the change. "I was wondering what 27 years of my life was worth. And that's where I was when God intervened. If He hadn't, I guess I would no longer be alive to tell the tale.
"Following Jesus has opened up a new chapter in my life."
