THE GHOST OF DEPRESSION
Only recently has Deborah Brockbank recognised the root problems of long standing depression. She tells her own story.
As a teenager I suffered from severe adolescent depression. At odds with myself and the world outside, I battled through three horrendous years of darkness and torment. But I never knew why.
Some depression is known as 'reactive' - triggered off by particular circumstances. Otherwise it is called 'endogenous', meaning 'from within'.
Mine was labelled 'endogenous'. No cause was ever found.
Miraculously, God delivered me from the torment and I experienced deep healing, although over the years, the ghost of depression has always been hovering to haunt me from time to time.
This year, some thirty years after those initial black years, God shed His light onto the circumstances which led up to the adolescent depression. I'd been sitting talking to God about inner healing and He inspired a poem which led me to understand the history behind my depression.
The good news is that we can take Jesus back into that childhood with us and allow the power of His love to uncover buried memoirs and to heal them. I feel as if I have recently embarked on a new adventure as I open up my childhood to Jesus and I know that deeper healing will be the outcome.
Community is not only for the robust - the physically and emotionally tough. What sort of family would that be!? Often God speaks through the weakest members.
Satan gains a lot from sickness and if he can rob us of the heart to care for one another then he's gained a whole lot more. As we stop in our busy lives to listen and care for the ill people among us, our love overturns the works of darkness.
