DUMBSTRUCK!
Popular and successful at school, Rae still wasn't satisfied with himself. Yet he was totally unprepared for the spiritual encounter that changed the course of his life
"I felt like my heart was a pool of water and a warm stone had dropped from the sky through my head and into my body. Its ripples of warmth went right through me." Young Rae Lee sensed the supernatural power of God as the vicar prayed for him. 'My doubts were melted away instantly!" This was a turning point in his life as a teenager.
At school, he was very popular and outgoing. "I was with the in-crowd - the funniest lads, the best-looking girls and the top sports people. I did well, but mum always expected more from me. I became very proud as I strove to achieve for myself. I was in the top set in everything, excelled in science and eventually became Head Boy."
But a surprise invitation to church from a school friend changed his life. "It was my first ever visit to a church, yet I sensed love and warmth in the air," he says. "I felt compelled to go and see the vicar (who was his friend's father) later on. I wanted this new life even though I was plagued by doubts."
The vicar spoke to Rae of the cost of being a Christian and then prayed powerfully for him. This was the turning point in Rae's life as he experienced the work of God within. For a scientist with many doubts and questions, this was a transforming moment.
"At the same time a mini-revival was going on in the school and lots of young people were finding God and receiving the Holy Spirit. Fourteen-year old lads would go back to their lessons, laughing and crying because they were so filled with the Holy Spirit. The, headmaster heard about it and closed down the Christian Union."
Rae was baptised in the sea soon afterwards and then, a few years later, one of his friends from school invited him to his church in Coventry. Once again, Rae found what he least expected. "I was dumbstruck! As I sat in this Jesus Army community house I could feel love in the air, I could see love in their eyes. I could reach out and touch love in the atmosphere. 'This is it! This is where I am meant to be', I thought."
"We're a people together where no-one is better than anyone else. The worst drunkard, alcoholic, drug addict or clean person all come to God through the saving power of Jesus. That's what brings us together. God's love is a powerful force that changes things. His love is not based on human desires but on His unsurpassable, love for all mankind. We are called to share that same love with all people."
