FLUID!
The right atmosphere is helpful to flow with humanity. One recent Jesus Army initiative made good use of a then empty cinema in Northampton. Nathan White reports.

We’d been having ‘Street Parties’ based round decks in the back of a van in the market square and we’d Come up with the idea – why not a ‘street Party’ inside instead of outside? We’d have more control over the atmosphere and could take it further.

Communicating the gospel to a spiritually open generation

Then we thought of a better option than using a pub – the derelict cinema in the centre of town that was due to be turned into our main Jesus Centre The foyer are a would be perfect …Now a name to reflect the atmosphere we want to create …Flexible Loving Unexpected Intuitive and Driven - ‘F.L.U.I.D.’ was born!

The word 'Fluid' describes the ability Jesus had to flow with humanity and relate to the culture he lived in. Our brief is to do the same as Him. If you’re going to easily meet and bond with today’s young People, then you’re going to need to create the right kind of backdrop. So Fluid had the same relaxed, informal atmosphere as you have in a club, or perhaps an after-party.

We ran Fluid for twelve consecutive weeks from 9pm to 3am (though by the time we’d got everybody home, the sun was usually coming up!) and ended by taking over The Sanctuary nightclub in Milton Keynes by way of a finale.

Even before the door opened on the first night there were more visitors waiting than team, especially from the pre-club 15 to 18 age group. With its ‘no-prejudice, no dress-code’ ethos, there was soon a good mix.

We used every type of music - chilled, funky, trance, hip hop, dnb and some of our own stuff to reflect what was going down at that moment, as different types of people were being engaged with. So all groups from ‘boardies’ and ‘townies’ to Kosovan refugees felt equally at home.

The town centre location meant people could walk in off the streets as they came out of the clubs. The derelict building gave the scene a kind of underground flavour - the opposite of a contrived Christianity happening.

'Picnic in the park' in Sheffield - reaching out to people with the love power of Jesus

We soon opened up a back room, as some of the crew wanted to bring guitars and jam. We prayed for people, washed their feet, welcomed people with endless quantities of nonalcoholic fruit punch!

By week three we had baptisms. People came to see their friends baptised. One chap said “That was intense! I’ve heard ‘Jesus this, Jesus that’ all my life - but now I’ve SEEN!”

The whole Fluid concept confounded people’s perceptions of ‘religion’.

Anything can happen when the Holy Spirit is around and God’s love is there. But you have to have drive to make it happen and at the end of the day it’s the human contact that’s the make or break factor. We can sort out the venue and the vibe but it’s up to our guys to make the first move. It was often the new people who were owning the scene and going on a mission to make it happen for others - showing them this mad Jesus culture they had just found.

Let’s bring our flavour of real Jesus freedom to their culture and mix our passion with their searching.
