Something unusual from a TV evangelist

Dorothea and Erich Reber, a young Swiss couple, visited the USA in Autumn 2002. Dorothea was pregnant, so they were both worried when she started suffering strong stomach pains after drinking something. She was unable to eat for days, and then had a severe migraine. Her condition deteriorated, and they were about to go to hospital when Erich suddenly had the impression that he should switch the TV on. "At first, I wondered what my wife would say when I told her that God told me to switch on the TV at midnight! But I did it," he says. "We saw a well-known TV evangelist," says Dorothea, "and the first person he prayed for stood up out of their wheelchair - but I thought 'not everyone in a wheelchair is paralysed'. After my first critical thought, the evangelist suddenly turned to the camera, saying 'A woman called Dorothea is watching! You're watching the programme for the first time. You have severe stomach pains and a migraine. God will now touch you and heal you!' And so it was - the pains left me that night, and I could eat again," she says.

Brazil

'Evangelicos' gain political influence

"'Evangelicos' - evangelical Christians of all forms - have made significant gains in Brazil's most recent elections," reports Klaus Hart in the Catholic 'Konradsblatt' (20th November 2002). Five bishops and twenty pastors join the national congress, forming a block of 64 Representatives and Senators. They also made gains in the Parliaments of the 26 States and the District of Brazilia. The 'Evangelico' Anthony Garotinho received over 15 million votes for the office of President, mainly from Evangelicos.

Colombia

Furniture out, intercessors in

"Since turning to Jesus, Igna de Suarez has been gathering people for prayer," writes Sheryl Wingerd in the Dawn Report. For the past 24 years, people have been gathering in her apartment for prayer. Now, over 250 people come to her each Tuesday. Every week, all the furniture on the ground floor is carried upstairs to make space for the many chairs which then fill the living room, dining room, kitchen and even garden. They pray not only for Colombia, but also for the nations in the 10/40 Window. One day, Igna prayed "Lord, please give me a burden for the Muslims." Not long after that, a young woman called her who had turned to Jesus from Islam. She told Igna that Jesus had appeared to her when she was 9 years old. She was saved then, but her father had since tried to kill her three times. She now lives in Igna's town. That experience gave Igna a burden to pray particularly for Muslims.

Ghana

Mohammed in church

"Where can you hear hundreds of Muslim names such as Achmed, Mohammed, Fatuma or Mariam in a Christian church? In which nation has the percentage of Muslims dropped by a quarter in the past decade? Ghana," says German missionary Walter Gschwandter. Thousands of pastors are being trained, causing a permanent scarcity of literature. Missions agencies such as OM (Operation Mobilisation) have sent a cry for more literature in Accra.

Pure water in the Cholera neighbourhood

"The African Christians' courageous faith has deeply impressed me," writes Gschwandter. "One pastor, for example, prayed for healing for a sick man. The man was healed, and gave Pastor A. a piece of land in the city's worst Cholera neighbourhood. 'Lord, you are the source of life - give us water,' the pastor prayed. After eleven days of tiresome digging, they hit solid rock. The drilling machine was useless. Time to give up? Not for Pastor A. and his team - they blasted the rock, and the miracle happened: beautifully pure water poured out, over 200 litres per minute! It is now the neighbourhood's water supply, and the Cholera has been reigned in."
