Healed of cancer

"The cancer diagnosis hit me like a bomb. Beside many tears, sleepless nights and desperation, we also experienced intense hope in God, who alone could help us," writes Walter-Heinz Heim, previously a businessman in the Stuttgart area. His doctor had diagnosed prostate cancer. "On the way home, I thought to myself 'Your mother died of cancer, your sister and uncle too. Now it's your turn.' I wept. When I went to the hospital for X-rays, I saw all the hairless children, youths and women untergoing radiation therapy. That's a sight you don't forget quickly."

Prophecy and healing

"In Italy, we were praying with some friends, when one of them suddenly said 'Heinz, I sense God telling you that you are healed, but that from today, you should live according to His Word.' I had heard of confirmed prophecies, but I had doubts. Was that really true? On returning home, I immediately went to my urologist and asked for another biopsy. 'You're the first patient I know to voluntarily undergo a second biopsy,' he said. When he asked me why, I told him honestly 'I have received a prophecy that I am completely healed.' The doctor had strong doubts, and told me that he also went to church on Sundays, 'but there's no such thing as that.' He performed the biopsy anyway. The result: I was healthy! 'There's no sign of cancer, even though we took a much larger tissue sample than the first time,' he said. I walked, no, floated out of his practice, weeping and laughing at the same time, and called my family to tell them of the miracle." Today, Walter-Heinz Heim cares for the homeless and other needy people in Stuttgart.

Something's happening in South Africa

Luis Bush (ex-AD 2000 Movement) and Rick Wood (ex US Center for World Mission) are researching the effect of the Gospel on cities in preparation for the coming Lausanne Movement's 3rd Global Conference. A consultation was recently held in Cape Town, South Africa, attended by 110 Christian leaders from six African nations: Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia and Nigeria.

Promising new initiatives

"A number of dynamic movements have started in recent years, which look promising. The potentially most important come from four different directions, but seem to all have the same aim - reinstating God's honour in a nation. That congruence can hardly be coincidental," says Dr. Johan Combrinck, Director of AFNET. Alongside 'Leadership Stream', a broad leadership training movement, is 'Jericho Walls', a strategic national movement to mobilise prayer, led by Dr. Bennie Mostert. Another group is the Church Planting Alliance of SA, working on saturation church planting and uniting the Evangelical Alliance of South Africa (TEASA), AFNET, AMR and others.

"If you can't change yourself..."

In addition, a strong Transformation movement has formed. "Since the first National Day of Prayer in Cape Town in March 2001, at which some 45,000 people repented and sought God's face, around 300,000 people have gathered in 8 stadia for prayer and reconciliation," reports Combrinck. The movement is led by Graham Power, a Christian businessman. Dr. Bruce Wilkerson points out that Christian leaders who are not themselves transformed according to 2nd Chronicles 7:14 cannot contribute to the healing and transformation of society, but that transformed leaders and churches can transform whole cities and societies.

'I have seen how you live'

"How do people come to faith in Christ in Africa?" ask German missionaries Winfried and Dr. Hildegard Steiner. "Do missionaries preach to a mass of 'poor souls' under a monkey-puzzle tree with a thick Bible under their arm and a pith helmet on their head? Two years ago, we needed a new grass roof for our house in Malawi. We employed five roofers, who happily went about their work. For two months, they saw almost everything which happened on the mission station. They watched us talk with visitors, and experienced some of the Bible studies. One of the men, Fazani from the Muslim Yao tribe, asked deep questions about Jesus. When his work was complete, he returned to his village. One month ago, he turned up on our doorstep, smiling broadly. 'I'm a Christian now, too. I follow Jesus.' Curious, we asked him why he made that decision. 'I have seen how you live, and heard and learned who Jesus is.'"
