Evangelistic 'palm reader'

Indian evangelist Sadhu Chellappa normally wears the same sort of saffron robe as holy men in India. While waiting for his flight at an airport in England recently, a security officer approached him and held her hand out. "What do you see in my hand?" she asked. "It's beautiful," he answered. "No, read my palm!" she told him. "You're a palm reader, aren't you?" Chellappa grasped the opportunity to explain the Gospel to the woman, telling her that a personal relationship with Jesus Christ is far better than having your palm read. The woman was so touched that she soon knelt to pray in full view of the crowds, having decided to follow Jesus.

Psalm 118:17 literally fulfilled

Manfred Walter, lifeguard at a public swimming pool, dove into the water 'because of a feeling', and swam to a man in the middle of the pool, surrounded by a group of youths. "There was no obvious emergency. I can only say that some sixth sense told me that the man was in danger," says Walter. A 35-year-old deacon lay in the water, his face bleeding, unconscious, not breathing and with no pulse. After resuscitation and emergency treatment, he was flown to hospital by helicopter. After two days in the intensive care ward, the deacon was out of danger. "I was that man!" writes Martin Sachs. "I'm now back to full health. One doctor told me that I'd had amazing luck. If I hadn't previously believed in miracles, I'd have to now. I had received a prophecy during a prayer time: 'I will not die, but live and proclaim the Lord's works' (Psalm 118:17)."

Philippines

9.1% Evangelicals - 20% in 2020?

Representatives of 28 Denominations, 44 Christian organizations and 23 independent churches met from 18-21 September in Tagaytay City in the Philippines to judge the results of the Dawn Partnership in their nation and check the missionary targets set by Christian leaders in 1975 and 1985. At that time, a long-term national cooperation called "Dawn 2000" began, with the aim of growing from 5,000 to 50,000 Christian churches and sending out 2,000 cross-cultural missionaries. The attendees of the conference made the following declaration: "We have received the report that there are at least 51,625 Christian churches in the nation, and that 3,125 cross-cultural missionaries were sent out. 38% of all Barangays (neighborhoods) have a church, and 9.1% of the population are evangelicals or 'full gospel'. The strategic cooperation has taught us many new lessons, but recognize that the task of 'making disciples' of the Philippines as a nation is not yet complete. We stand together, and are again determined to continue to work to see our nation transformed by the Gospel, experiencing economic frugality, social peace, national and public justice and a growing praying Church. We identify with the sins of our people, and pray for revival, with the aim of planting 20,000 new churches in the next five years, and 30,000 more by 2010. We will continue to cooperate to see that another 12% of barangays have a local Christian church by the year 2005, another 30% by 2010, and that 1,000 new missionaries will be sent out by 2005, and 2,000 more by 2010. Our aim is that 13% of all Filipinos are evangelical by 2005, and 20% by 2020."

Togo

Dead child revived through prayer

"I was at Tom's house last Friday. Their electricity had been cut off because they were unable to pay the bills, and a prayer meeting was planned at their house that evening," reports Cosmos Touleassi from Togo, western Africa. "After we had praised God for a while, a couple arrived whose 2-year-old son had just died. They were crying and weeping in desperation. The dead boy's mother heard us singing, and told her husband, 'We have no money for the hospital's morgue, so let's go in and see whether God will do something.' A Christian took the dead child in her arms, and Tom said 'If these people bring the dead child to us, it means that they believe that God will do something.' So we prayed for about 20 minutes, until Tom started to cry and finally said 'The child is alive!' The confusion was indescribable, as everyone excitedly thanked God for reviving the child. The parents decided to follow Jesus." Swiss Vineyard's Markus Moser adds: "Cosmos was a refugee in Switzerland a number of years ago, and became a missionary, returning to Togo six years ago to plant new churches with the Vineyard. There are now over 30 house churches in Lome and central Togo."
