President Wahid takes in victims of violence

The persecution and destruction in Indonesia again increased dramatically in December 1999, according to a report from Jeff Hammond quoting well-informed sources in the nation. Some Islamic groups have declared a Jihad (holy war) agains Christians, with the aim of wiping them out. "When Christians respond to protect their women and children, the press (especially the western press) labels it a "religious war" and paints the Christians as being just as bad as the Muslims. This is not like North Ireland," he writes. In a recent attack on a rehabilitation center in Jakarta, run by Christian doctor Royandi Hutasoit, one student was hacked to death and many others seriously wounded. Indonesia's President, Abdurrahman Wahid, took in 31 of the female students to his home until they could find alternate accommodation. The Vice President, Megawati, stated that the government's ability to intervene in the situation is limited, and called on the Christians to be patient and suffer without resorting to violence against the militant Muslims, in order to prevent an even deeper split in the nation. In the midst of all this, people are coming to know Christ every day.

'Fast Forward' in California

Many Christians from all over the world are calling for sustained periods of prayer and fasting. Lou Engle, a Californian intercession leader reports: "In a dream, an intercessor saw a large Roman goddess making waves which were causing problems for many swimmers. Suddenly, an angel came down from heaven and told the intercessor 'This kind will not be overcome except through 40 days of prayer and fasting'. 'As in Jesus' time?' she asked, to which the angel replied 'Yes, just as in Jesus' time'. I was devastated", writes Engle, "because we have a Roman goddess, Minerva, on the Calfornian coat of arms. Many Christians in California will be fasting from 1 January to 9 February 2000, seeking God's presence and repenting for 'Hollywood's religious sins' among other things. Robert Fitts and Myoko Kaide have also called 2,000 Christian churches to 40 days of prayer and fasting, and Bill Bright, founder of Campus Crusade for Christ, has called for another 40 days of prayer and fasting from 10 February." The following are further signs that God has called Americans to prayer and fasting:

• Sarah, a young student at "Life Bible College", reports that 1,200 students sensed God telling them to fast from 1 January to 9 February 2000;
• A pastor in San Francisco was sitting on the beach with his wife when they were attacked by a swarm of flies. They ran to their car for shelter, and the pastor sensed God telling him "study the flies. I will show you the weak points in the enemy's armour." The pastor discovered that most flies have a reproduction period of less than 40 days. "If you spray the flies with insecticide for 40 days, the next generation is completely wiped out. If we pray and fast for 40 days, we will see breakthroughs and opportunities which were not there before. Beelzebub, the Lord of the Flies, is a sprinter, not a marathon runner";
• a quiet, 15-year-old girl in Nevada felt the urge to pray for the youths in her village of 2,000. For 40 days, she fasted and drank only fruit juice. At the end of the time of fasting, 17 youths decided to become Christians, and her youth group grew from 11 to 50 members;
• Elijah, a 20-year-old Korean Christian in San Diego, decided to fast for 40 days at the start of the school year, and mobilise the students in San Diego's High Schools for prayer. In one school, the numbers attending the prayer meeting grew from 20 to 50, then to 250.

What prophets hear for the new millennium

"A number of intercessors and prophets recently met in the World Prayer Center, Colorado Springs, to seek God and hear what he wants to say to the world", reports American intercession leader Cindy Jacobs. Those attending included Chuck Pierce, Dutch Sheets, Mike & Cindy Jacobs, Mike Bickle, Barbara Wentroble, Jim and Michal Ann Goll, Tommy Tenney, Bart Pierce, Beth Alves, Harold Caballeros and Dr. C. Peter Wagner and his wife Doris. Under the motto "test all things and retain that which is good", here is some of what they heard:

• many Jews will find Jesus in the coming decade, and some will speak of a "people's movement" among the Russian Jews. Persecution of Jews in Russia will increase in the autumn of 2000, and Christians should pray to prevent another Holocaust;
• there will be a revival amongst youths in the USA. Christians should prepare themselves, and not judge youths according to their appearance;
• the Kingdom of God will be spread through apostolic and prophetic ministry laying a foundation for the church. A significant transition in the church will occur in the period from 2000 to 2003;
• there will be a great move of the Holy Spirit among women, who will play a significant role in the coming global revival;
• the global economic systems will be shaken. Now is the time to learn God's economic principles, investing in the Kingdom of God and not in the world's systems;
• God will shake governments, and a number of heads of state will kneel before Jesus, putting their nations in his hands;
• Eurasia's Islamic nations will form a political and military alliance with their northern neighbours;
• there will be an increase in the number of natural catastrophes: hurricanes, floods, earthquakes and other disasters.

One woman's attitude to her mortal enemies

As Emmanuel Duknzemnriya returned home from work on 21 April 1994, his children screamed 'Mama is dead!'. His wife Appoline lay in a pool of blood on the floor. She had been attacked by a gang of Hutu rebels wielding machetes, but was not dead. She fought death for three months, but is now healed, as she herself testified in front of an audience of 7,000 during the Explo 2000 conference in Lausanne, Switzerland. The conference in Lausanne was linked via satellite to 87 other Explo conferences, including one in Kigali, Rwanda's capital, attended by a mixed crowd of 20,000 Hutus and Tutsis! Today, Appoline can forgive her torturers. As a Christian, she learned not to suppress the hate and pain, but to address the feelings. Today, she can pray "Lord Jesus, forgive Rwanda, and forgive the gang who attacked us in our home."
